What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a permanent replacement for missing teeth. They consist of a small metal post surgically implanted into the jawbone (the implant), a small connecting piece (the abutment), and a restoration such as a crown or a bridge.
The Benefits Of Dental Implants
Our patients experience many benefits from using dental implants to replace missing teeth. Dental implants:
- Look and feel like natural teeth
- Help maintain facial shape and prevent sagging
- Keep jaw bone loss at bay
- Stabilize surrounding teeth
- Can last a lifetime
The Dental Implant Procedure
Before starting the dental implant process, you’ll visit our office for a consultation. During this appointment, we’ll discuss the best dental implant option for you. We will also determine whether you need additional procedures, like a bone graft, prior to your implant surgery.
The first procedure is the placement of the actual implant.
- During this step, we make an incision into the gums to expose the jaw bone and then place the implant securely into the bone tissue.
- Over the next few months, the implant will fuse with the bone, giving you a strong base for the restoration.
- Once the implant has fused, we place the abutment through a small incision that exposes the implant.
- Your gums need to heal for a couple of weeks, at which time we place your restoration.
Types Of Dental Implants
Depending on how many teeth you’re missing, we may recommend either single-tooth dental implants or an implant-supported bridge. Our team is well-versed in placing both, so rest assured you’re in good hands.
When you’re only missing one tooth or a couple of teeth that are spread out, a single-tooth implant is usually your best option. This is a one-for-one replacement where we place one implant in the place of one missing tooth. We top a single tooth implant with a porcelain crown, so it blends in perfectly among your other natural teeth.
With an implant-supported bridge, we can replace multiple teeth in a row using just two implants. We place the implants on each end of the gap created by your missing teeth. For the restoration, we top those implants with crowns that connect to a bridge of artificial teeth.
What To Expect During Dental Implant Recovery
Dental implant placement is a surgery, and like with any surgical procedure, you will need some time to heal before you get back to normal activities. In the first 24 hours after the placement, you can expect some discomfort. Be sure to follow care instructions for taking medications to help with the discomfort. Rest as much as you can so your body can begin the healing process.
Discomfort and swelling should begin to subside after about three days. Continue to avoid hard or crunchy foods and any foods and drinks at extreme temperatures. Rinse your mouth and brush your teeth regularly, but make sure to avoid brushing the immediate implant area(s).
After about two weeks, you’ll come back for a follow-up appointment. At this point, you should also be brushing completely normally and be back to eating all your normal foods. The site should be almost completely healed by this time, although over the next few months, the implant will continue to fuse with the bone.
