Orthodontics is concerned with correcting what are known as “bad bites,” including crossbites, underbites, and overbites. It also focuses on fixing crooked, crowded, or gapped teeth. Using orthodontics to correct these issues improves smile aesthetics, makes it easier to talk and chew, and helps prevent future (potentially costly) dental problems.
The Benefits Of Orthodontics
Our orthodontic solutions provide our patients with a number of benefits, including improved:
- Biting and chewing
- Alignment of teeth
- Oral hygiene
When you have a straighter smile, you also lower your risk of tooth decay and gum disease and are less likely to experience dental emergencies.
Our Orthodontic Options
At our office, we are able to offer our patients both traditional braces and clear aligner therapy. During your consultation, we’ll go over both options and which may be right for you.
These braces are what most people envision when they think of braces. Traditional braces consist of metal brackets attached to teeth and connected by thin wires. As treatment progresses, we tighten the wire to create a gradual movement of teeth. We recommend this treatment for people with more complex straightening needs or jaw alignment issues. Typical treatment time lasts from one to three years and depends on your specific straightening needs.
Clear aligners are a more modern way to straighten teeth. Patients love clear aligners because they can straighten their teeth subtly and continue to eat all their favorite foods. This treatment uses a series of virtually invisible trays to gently move teeth into better positions. To start the treatment, we take images and impressions of the patient's teeth, and we work with them to develop a 3D model of their ideal smile. We send that information to the lab, where we create the first set of trays. Patients should wear their trays for at least 20 to 22 hours a day and change to the next set of trays every one to two weeks. Treatment typically lasts 12 to 18 months.
When To Start Orthodontic Treatment
The average age for children to get braces is between 10 and 14 years old. However, because we always want to prevent issues or catch them early, we recommend that your child be evaluated for orthodontic treatment around age seven. That means your child could get braces before all their permanent teeth are in.
It’s never too late, though, to get a straighter smile. No matter your age, we can complete an orthodontic evaluation and develop a treatment plan to get your smile into shape.
