The Importance Of Prevention
We encourage our patients to be proactive about their dental health. Practicing prevention helps you maintain optimal dental health and lessen your risk for future dental problems. It also allows our team to use conservative treatment when problems do arise.
Cleanings & Exams
The best way to prevent dental issues is to visit our office every six months for a routine exam and cleaning. During this appointment, we’ll take any necessary x-rays, do a visual exam of your teeth and gums, clean any plaque from your teeth, and finish by polishing your teeth to a shine.
A dental exam consists of your hygienist looking at all your teeth, gums, and jaw. They will check for signs of TMD (a jaw joint disorder that causes clicking and discomfort when you open and close your mouth), do a visual check for signs of decay, and use dental tools to check your tooth enamel for any softness. Finally, they will measure the pockets in your gums around your teeth, as this can be a sign of gum disease.
For the cleaning, the hygienist will use tools to remove plaque and tartar from gums. They will then use a gritty paste to scrub the surface of teeth. Finally, they will do a professional flossing to clean the space between the teeth, do a final rinse, and leave you with a shining smile.
We understand that emergencies happen, which is why we set aside time in our schedule for emergency dental exams. An emergency exam is a limited exam that focuses specifically on the area that is causing you problems. Our main goal with an emergency exam is to address the immediate issue and provide you relief from your discomfort.
If additional treatment is needed, we will walk you through that and schedule you for any necessary additional appointments. If you experience a dental emergency, like a broken tooth or a lost crown, please don’t hesitate to call our office. We will do what we can to see you as soon as possible.
Proper Home Care
Part of preventative care is your at-home oral hygiene routine. In addition to visiting our office regularly, it is important that you brush your teeth at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes and floss daily.
When you brush, you should use a soft-bristled brush and toothpaste that has fluoride in it. Brush all the surfaces of your teeth, including the backs and the chewing surfaces. Keep your gums healthy by brushing them along the gum line and at a 45-degree angle.
To floss, use a long piece of floss (about 18 inches or so) and wrap the ends around your middle fingers. Use your thumbs and index fingers to guide the floss gently between your teeth. Curl the floss around each tooth in a C-shape and gently swipe up and down a few times to dislodge food particles.
